„Forefather footprints”
Youth exchange, 14.th-22.th of July in Nedelica

1.About the project in general

The project “Forefather’s footprints is a multilateral youth exchange organised in the frame of the YOUTH PROGRAME.
The basic aim is meeting of young people from different countries, intercultural learning, discovering the hosting place and tradition, active participation of the participants in presenting their country and culture and exchanging good practise of using the cultural heritage for rural development by young people.

The main topics of this exchange are cultural heritage and tradition and rural development. The participants will stay on an old traditional panonian house-farm, which will serve as the gate leading the participants back to the past; for one week they will life like our grandparents did; follow their footprints regarding their daily work, the games and dances children played in the beginning 19 century. We will prepare our food on open fire, and sleep in tents under the starts.

About the hosting REGION

Prekmurje (or Transmuraland) is the easternmost region of Slovenia. It borders Hungary to the north-east, Austria to the north-west, Croatia to the south and the Slovenian region of Štajerska to the south-west. It is named after the Mura river which separates it from the rest of Slovenia (a literal translation from Slovenian would be Over-Mura).

The region is flat in the south near the rivers Mura and its smaller affluent Ledava, and hilly in the north (Goričko).The capital city of the region is Murska Sobota. Other towns include Lendava, Dobrovnik, Turnišče, Beltinci, Črenšovci.

There is a sizable Hungarian population in the region, as well as a large number of Gypsies.

The target group are 5 youngsters aged from 18-25 years with one group leader interested in the topic of the exchange. The participating organizations coming from different countries are:

2.Practical arrangements

How to arrive to Nedelica?

For participants coming by plane:
Airport Ljubljana (Capital)
From the airport till Ljubljana city bus, leaving from the airport till the train station in Ljubljana,
Or nearby airports:
Trieste (Italy), Klagenfurt (Austria) Zagreb (Croatia)
Then train connections till Ljubljana or directly to Murska Sobota.
Coming by train:
There are quite good train connections from the capital till Murska Sobota (the closest city to Nedelica)
Here we will arrange a van transfer to bring you to Nedelica.
For the Romanian group we recommend trains till Budapest and from Budapest also to Murska Sobota (via Hodos.)

Accommodation

As mentioned, the exchange will take place on the homestead Kovaceva domacija.
To follow the spirit of life, work and entertainment of our forefathers, we will sleep in tents in the yard. Thus also all the other equipment will be equal to the camping conditions: shower, toilets, etc…
In fact we will reconstruct also this parts of our forefathers every day life. (for example we will prepare the bathroom in the way they used to have it…)

Anyway the homestead is also equipped with temporary bathroom and kitchen in case of necessity ;)

Regarding this, please mind to bring:
- comfortable and also warm clothes
- sleeping bag
- a lot of good will for camping spirit ;))

Food

For the time of the exchange we will have a nice women cooking for us traditional food of the region. The meals will be served three times a day on the homestead Kovaceva domacija, except when the activities will take place in other locations. Then we will prepare “pocketmeals” or we will eat in a restaurant.
If there are any vegetarians or people requiring special diet please inform us in advance in order to prepare the meals in the needed way.

3.Programme activities

What needs to be prepared by the national groups?

We will prepare traditional food of the place, and learn about old costumes as well as old handicrafts, like pottery, restoration, husking, weaving, making products out of straw, making baskets out of switches, and one day voluntary working on a farm.
There will be also visits of local and regional sights, sport activities, like horse ridding and boating on the river Mura.
We expect from the participating groups to prepare workshops related to the topic of the exchange; traditional handicraft and cooking workshops. It should be something possible to realize, simple and interesting as well. When the decision will betaken, please send us a list of possible materials that we need to prepare in advance. (Cooking ingredients, etc…)
For the sport afternoon it is required that each group prepares also some old games or sport activities, some also possible to compete in.
For the round table discussion we would like to ask each national group to prepare a short presentation of the situation in the rural areas regarding good practices of development using the cultural and natural heritage of the region where the group comes from.
One representative of each group will make the presentation, which should not be longer then 10-15 minutes.
The discussion will be open also fro other participants, as well as for the representatives of local development organisations, local authorities and mass media.

Each evening there will be a national evening, where national groups will present their country and culture, but strongly linked with the old traditions of their countries or regions, by preparing small amounts of food, drinks, performing some typical dances, etc. Please try to prepare a presentation in the spirit of the main topic of the exchange!!!!

A concrete outcome of the exchange will be e booklet, where all the typical and traditional games, songs, handicraft, etc... will be collected and published.

Insurance

We will make an AXA insurance for all the participants, for the time of the Youth Exchange.
